Sabhal Mor Ostaig, on the Sleat peninsula, is Skye’s Gaelic College, offering courses in many aspects of Gaelic life, language and culture.

Return north to reach Broadford, from where a diversion southwest on the B8083 leads, after 14 miles (22km), to the scattered village of Elgol 3 [map]. It was from here on 4 July 1746 that the Young Pretender, after being given a banquet by the Mackinnons in what is now called Prince Charles’s Cave, finally bade farewell to the Hebrides. The view of the Black Cuillins from here is one of the most splendid in all Britain.

In summer, motorboats go from Elgol across wide Loch Scavaig, past schools of seals, to land passengers on the rocks from where they can scramble upwards to Loch Coruisk in the very heart of the Cuillins. The scene was much painted by Turner and other Romantics and written about by Sir Walter Scott.
